Sentinel Surveillance of Soil transmitted Helminthes (STH) for Neglected Tropical Disease Control Program in Nepal

Amongst the three endemic neglected tropical disease, soil transmitted helminthes is the commonest- especially among the school children. The surveillance conducted by the organization assisted in guiding the treatment policy of the disease.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTD) are primarily infectious diseases that thrive in impoverished settings, especially in the heat and humidity of tropical climates. The three major soil transmitted helminthes namely roundworm, hookworms and whipworm have been an endemic priority public health problem throughout the country. The survey primarily aimed to monitor and evaluate the prevalence of different helminthes infections in school aged children. The program covered four districts i.e. Rautahat and Saptari from Terai region and Rukum and Salyan from Hilly region. The major activities of the program were refresher training and to conduct the survey.
