Community Promotion of IYCF linked with Child Grant (IYCF/CG)
Although child mortality has gone down over the years, improvement in nutritional status of children has not kept pace. To address the shortcomings, cash grant has proved to be useful in reducing malnutrition in children if appropriately combined with nutritional interventions. This gains more importantly in Karnali zone where most of the socio economic indicators lag behind. Therefore, SDPC took lead as an implementing organization for the proposed project.
Community Promotion of IYCF linked with Child Grant is an innovative approach to enhance and support children under five years by addressing child poverty, deprivation, vulnerability and malnourishment in Nepal which was implemented by the Government of Nepal in 2009/10. SDPC was entrusted to implement the "Community Promotion of IYCF linked with Child Grant (IYCF/CG") in four districts of Karnali zone namely Humla, Jumla, Kalikot and Dolpa where most of the socio economic indicators lag behind. The programme aimed to improve Child Grant beneficiaries' knowledge on IYCF, hygiene and sanitation and other key nutritional behaviors, encourage in using child grant for the improvement of the nutritional status of the nutritional status of the children, assist mothers and caretakers to identify the best possible locally available food which will help to improve the nutritional status of the children and build capacity of government health workers and volunteers on IYCF content for the further intervention in the community for purpose of sustainability. The major activities performed were advocacy and capacity building, awareness and promotional activities, monitoring and supervision.
